Meet the Chiefs

Welcome to the Valley Family Medicine Chiefs' Page. We are both honored and excited to have been selected chiefs for the 2009-2010 year. The great residents at VFM have helped and continue to make this an excellent program, one which both of us are proud to be a part of. We love our residents and enjoy all of the opportunities that we get to spend together, especially outside of Valley. As often as possible, we try to get together and have beach parties, go hiking in the Cascades/Olympics, Cross-country ski, check out new restaurants (Sushi & Thai are popular choices), or just hang out.

We both agree the reason we enjoy our Valley Family Medicine Residency Program, is that everyday we manage and learn about a broad spectrum of diseases, as well as patients from diverse backgrounds and multiple cultures. We both are committed to the underserved community Valley Family Medicine serves. It is exciting to take care of babies that we have delivered in our clinic, and even more meaningful to watch them grow into toddlers during our years here. Residents also learn to manage complicated patients in the ICU with multi-organ dysfunction and are highly respected in the hospital setting and in the community. We have excellent relationships with attendings, specialists and nursing staff (being that there are no other residency programs in our hospital).

As for our career plans, we are following pretty typical paths for graduates from our program. Graduates feel well-prepared to go out into the “real world.” It is impressive that they have gone on to practice in an astonishingly diverse areas and locations (Obstetrics with/without c-sections, fellowships, academia, urgent care, hospitalist/in-patient medicine, sports medicine, rural, urban, community health centers, osteopathic medicine, international medicine, etc). It’s also comforting for us to know residents perform, on average, above the 80th percentile nationally on the annual Family Medicine In-training Exam, a testament to the quality, abilities and to the excellent training our residents receive during residency.

Sarah Maitre, MD
I am a new transplant to West Seattle, a move that has shortened my commute considerably. I enjoy cooking, hiking, exploring the Northwest, particularly in the winter, when I can cross-country ski. Currently keeping my job options open, I plan on joining either a community or group practice, with a focus on women's health and OB, in the Seattle area. I am looking forward to traveling more, improving my Spanish, learning how to play guitar, and expanding my knowledge of the best budget-friendly eateries in the area.

Jaime Payne, MD, MPH
I bought a house in West Seattle with my husband, Joel. It is only a 20 minute commute to Valley, which makes it very convenient. Also living in my house are 3 crazy cats: Odin "the Orange", Snowshoe, & Isbjorn, which means "Polar Bear" in Norwegian. If that weren't enough to keep us busy, we are also expecting a baby in December to add to the chaos. My future career plans include full spectrum family medicine with mainly OB, and an emphasis on outpatient care. I also very much enjoy Preventative Health and promoting healthy lifestyles. Most likely, I will join a group practice around the Seattle area when I am finished with residency. Outside of Valley I love to travel, play outdoors & stay active, swim, eat food (pregnancy is a great excuse for this), & hang out with my family.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
